Baylor Club Sports Spotlight: Baylor Wake

Baylor Wake team makes a splash for water-loving students

April 19, 2023

It is not every day that you see a fully decked-out boat parked in the middle of Baylor’s campus. When you do, it is most likely the enthusiastic members of Baylor Wake, advertising tryouts for their unique club team.

The club primarily wakeboards but will participate in all sports that have “wake” in the name. Members represent Baylor in the Collegiate Wake Tour, competing against schools all across the nation.

Anyone is invited to try out for the team, including new riders, as tryouts are primarily used to gauge interest. Practices are not required, but the boat goes out twice a day Monday through Friday, weather permitting. Members can ride up to two times a week on the waters of the Brazos River or at Waco Surf, a surf an wakeboard lagoon.

One of the unique things about Baylor Wake is that it is almost completely run by members. More competitive and experienced riders help teach the newer riders, resulting in a supportive community on and off the water.

Brenna Moss, senior from Montrose, Colo., is the current Baylor Wake President. Her favorite part about Baylor Wake is the community.

“Everyone is friends with everyone and roots for each other,” Moss says. “It is a very uplifting and exciting culture, especially on the boat. The hype of someone getting up for the first time or someone landing a trick just sends smiles throughout the boat.”

Baylor Wake is made up of students from across multiple academic disciplines, geographic regions and social backgrounds that all come together to compete and practice a sport they love. Members also participate in group-building activities such as volleyball tournaments, Bible studies, formals and other social events.

Serving as president of the team has taught Moss about leadership and a new appreciation for working as a team.

“I just get to hang out with my best friends all the time,” Moss said. “Everyone is so supportive and just makes the day better. Who doesn’t want to take a break from class in the middle of the week to go on a boat with some awesome people?”
