Steppin’ Out Into the Community
Twice each year, Baylor University students embody the spirit of service during Steppin' Out, a day when thousands of students step away from campus life to engage with and uplift the Waco community. Through projects ranging from gardening at local schools to beautifying public spaces, this day serves as a bridge between Baylor students and their neighbors. The most recent Steppin’ Out took place November 9, serving as a biannual reminder of the mutual support between Baylor and its neighbors, where students are empowered to take care of their community and, in return, gain the assurance that they have had lent a helping hand in toward Waco’s continued flourishing.
Laura Beth Lynch, a junior Professional Writing and Rhetoric major from Charlotte, NC shared, “I think Steppin’ Out benefits our community by drawing the Baylor and Waco communities closer together through service. It is really cool to see so many Baylor students pouring into our own Waco community, and I think serving our neighbors is one of the highest callings we can do.”
For many students, this event goes beyond deepening connections within their organizations; it helps foster lasting memories. “I loved getting to see Waco in a new light and get some community service time,” said Sophia Whetstone, a Political Science major from California explained, “It allowed me to make closer bonds with friends from other organizations.”
From kayaking on the Brazos River to pick up trash, to helping paint houses or rebuilding garden beds at elementary schools, this day often provides unexpected joys, as students ‘step out’ into the greater Waco community.
This event embodies Baylor University’s dedication to fostering a spirit of service and connection. Baylor senior Bella O’Guinn, a Neuroscience major from Kenai, Alaska, highlighted the significance of this tradition, stating, “Steppin' Out is an opportunity for us as Baylor students to pour out our love onto the greater Waco community.”
