Baylor Missions 2015

Baylor students, faculty, staff and alumni have the opportunity to integrate faith, learning and service with a broad Christian view through Baylor Global Missions. Throughout 2015, students will travel to 14 countries, as well as locations in Texas and Washington, D.C.

The first Baylor Missions teams of 2015 were commissioned prior to Spring Break, traveling to Peru, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and the Texas border. These five teams of 78 Baylor students, faculty and staff were engaged in discipline-specific trips, integrating their faith with service and learning.

Baylor Global Missions will continue as 16 teams of more than 250 students, faculty, staff and alumni participate in May mini-mester and summer trips.


Report: 2015 Spring Break Missions Teams

Dominican Republic
Multicultural Association of Pre-Health Students Team
The 11 students and one Baylor staff member of the Multicultural Association of Pre-Health Students Team partnered with the Good Samaritan Mission Council in La Roman. The students observed and practiced routine check-ups in local medical clinics, gaining a greater understanding of service in the medical field.

Guatemala
American Medical Student Association Team
The American Medical Student Association sent 19 students, two Baylor faculty members and a guest medical doctor to the communities of La Cieneguia, Huehuetenango, and La Victoria, Quetzaltenango. Partnered with the local organization Global CHE, the team helped to set up temporary clinics to bring free care to locals who are often unable to receive necessary medical treatments.

Sports and Community Development Team
Partnered with Buckner International in Guatemala City, this team of 11 students, one Baylor faculty member and a university guest participated in community development with the Buckner Family Hope Center through a sports camp for children, English as a Second Language (ESL) for adults and children and other hands-on service projects.

Peru
Nursing Team
A team of 13 nursing students from Baylor’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing traveled to Lima, where they worked with a local church, Iglesia Evangelica Baptista Morada de Dios, to offer health education and physical assessments to the community of the host church. The students also researched local health practices.

Eagle Pass
Texas Urban Mission Team
Two Baylor staff members and 16 students traveled to Eagle Pass to partner with Mission Border Hope and Literacy ConneXus. The team read to preschoolers in daycares in the morning and provided an afternoon literacy program for children in the Eagle Pass community in the afternoon while also working with the Restorative Justice Program to build relationships with students in the program.

Brazil
Sports Ministry Team
Student-athletes and staff will partner with the Brazilian Sports Coalition in Rio de Janeiro, Maceio and Belo Horizonte to share the love of Christ through the common language of sports by engaging the community in sports camps.

El Salvador
Music Team
In San Salvador and the surrounding communities, student musicians and faculty will lead worship services, present concerts and give presentations in schools, churches and theaters.

Ghana
Leadership Team (Education)
Focused on education in rural Ghana, students will work alongside teachers outside Kumasi in the village of Kyerekrom, participating in a variety of activities such as sharing the gospel, teaching, supporting teachers, providing school supplies and more.

Leadership Team (Medical)
Focused on health care in Ghana, students will assist in providing care to patients in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Hospital as well as participate in rotations and learn more about health concerns in Ghana.

Guatemala
Kappa Kappa Gamma Team
Baylor Kappa Kappa Gamma members will travel to Antigua to work with special needs children at Hermano Pedro hospital and with orphans and foster families at Village of Hope.

Nutrition Team
Hosted by Mission Guatemala, students will assist with food preparation, complete nutritional assessments, conduct nutrition games and activities with school-aged children and give puppet plays.

Haiti
Engineering Team
Students and faculty will travel to Ferrier to partner with Mission Waco in community development using their engineering skills to assemble and install a solar photovoltaic system to provide electricity to a community training center, in addition to meeting other community needs.

Mexico
Baylor Religious Hour Choir Mission Team
In partnership with ACTION International, students will serve in Merida by performing in various musical concerts and church services in the villages, building a bungalow, engaging in sports ministry and participating in a VBS-style camp.

Uganda
Accounting Team
Students will teach vocational seminars on business consulting and micro-lending in partnership with Pastors Discipleship Network and Global Hands of Hope in Jinja and Kampala.

Vietnam/China
Nursing Team
In China and Vietnam, Baylor nursing faculty and students will work with the NGO known as Glocal Ventures, Inc. and Nam Dinh University as they participate in cultural exposure, formal lecture and clinical observation.

Zambia
Women's Leadership Team
Students trained in teaching leadership skills to women and girls through a relational approach and small group conversations will serve in Lusaka at Family Legacy and the Tree of Life Children's Home.

Washington D.C.
Social Work "Hunger in America" Team
Students, faculty and staff will explore the scope, causes and impact of hunger in America while volunteering and serving at organizations such as DC Central Kitchen, Maryland Breakfast in the Classroom, the United States Department of Agriculture, Capital Area Food Bank and Bread for the World.

Dominican Republic
Social Work Team
A select group of upperclassmen will participate in teacher training at the Buckner International Family Hope Center in addition to contributing to research and assessment of the Family Hope Center.

Zambia
MBA Team
Baylor faculty, with assistance from MBA students, will teach a two-week intensive business course for Northrise University, and Baylor students and faculty will tour Zambian industries and discuss processes and performance issues with executives from those organizations.

Belize
Childhood Development Team
Working in a collaborative effort with Teachers for a Better Belize and the Toledo Ministry of Education, students will serve alongside educators on a summer arts camp in Punta Gorda.

Malawi
Biology Team
Students and faculty will partner with a team of University of Malawi students to conduct ecological studies at Lake Malawi National Park and to then present a symposium at Lake Malawi National Park Museum and World Wildlife Fund and Unesco World Heritage Center.
