Faculty and Staff Go Green for Sustainability

January 28, 2016
Recently, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education recognized Baylor University as one of the top performing colleges and universities in the 2015 Sustainable Campus Index, as measured by the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System.

“This recognition validates the ongoing efforts of our campus partners to create a more sustainable campus community,” said Pattie Orr, vice president for Information Technology and dean of University Libraries, who has championed Baylor’s sustainability efforts since 2007. “Their collective efforts along with administrative support from the highest levels of the university have made our past efforts a success and encourage us as we pursue our Sustainable 2020 goals.”

Baylor faculty and staff can participate in the University’s sustainability efforts in a number of ways. By following the simple guidelines below, faculty and staff members can both practice sustainable environmental management and also help to establish an institutional culture of sustainability.

Recycle
• Use one of the over 700 recycling bins located around campus to recycle your cardboard, paper, aluminum cans and plastic. You may also recycle glass in Moody Library, the Student Union Building, Baylor Sciences Building and any of our LEED Certified buildings.
• Recycle used toner cartridges. Plastic used in ink cartridges can take over 10 centuries to decompose naturally. Drop off bins can be found in the following locations:
- Moody Library (back dock)
- Clifton Robinson Tower (back lobby by the glass doors)
- Speight Street Garage (loading dock)
- Baylor Sciences Building (first floor by the back counter)
• Ask your office manager to request a mixed recycling box to place in your office and by copy machines.

Eat Green
•Skip meat once a week. Red meat is the most resource-intensive food on the table; one pound of meat requires 12,000 gallons of water to process.
•Get a reusable coffee mug or refillable bottle. Beverage discounts with reusable cup purchase are available at Starbucks, Atrium Cafe, Einstein Bros Bagels and P.O.D. Convenience Store.

Travel Smart
•Turn your car off and stop idling. Just 10 seconds of idling requires more gas than restarting your car.
•Walk around campus. Enjoy the fresh air and moderate exercise, rather than driving from building to building.
•Need to get somewhere across campus? Ride the Baylor University Shuttle, between 7:25 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. every weekday.

Save Electricity
•Last Out, Lights Out. Turn off your office or classroom lights when you leave the room.
•Rather than requesting a temperature adjustment for your room or building, you can help us be good stewards of our resources by bringing a blanket or fan to keep at your desk if you tend to feel cold or hot. Baylor strives to operate its systems so that energy is not expended to heat spaces above 72° or to cool them below 74° during occupied times.
