Baylor Traditions Ornaments Raise Funds for Hurricane Relief, Recovery

February 23, 2018
The 2017 Baylor Traditions Ornaments raised almost $60,000 from 2,080 donors to help fund Hurricane Harvey relief efforts by Baylor students.

Baylor Missions will send three volunteer teams to serve in Rockport this year, including students from the Honors Residential College travelling in January, students and faculty from the Texas Hunger Initiative and the athletic department serving during Spring Break and students from the Leadership Living and Learning Center working in May. The student volunteers will help with ongoing clean-up and rebuilding, and the Hunger Initiative team will work with the local school district to distribute food.

Last fall, 50 Baylor students served at 15 sites across three areas of Houston devastated by the August 23 storm. A team representing Teal Residential College and Engineers with a Mission served at 10 sites in Southeast Houston, where they cleared debris and installed insulation and drywall. Other teams served in Northwest Houston and the 5th Ward, one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods, cleaning homes and unloading donations. One student described the experience as a lesson not only in how to tear down walls but how to be a servant leader, grow in faith and see God from a new perspective. Thank you to everyone who helped Baylor help people in need.
